Think of the music artist, who needs to daily work on his music and makes sure that his instruments are all in good shape. He needs to spend hours practicing outside the public view in order to give the performance of his life once afforded an opportunity. Think of the formula one driver, who has to spend hours practicing how to be the best driver in formula 1 and spend long periods of time with the team that work on his car to drive the performance.

Although the two careers mentioned above are worlds apart, the principles remain similar in terms of the work that is required to get to world class. The pressure that they feel once they get on stage is backed by the amount of time spent in practice, getting better at the craft. We need to also understand that marketing works on the same principles. When you are at work, you are on stage, performing what you should have spent time learning in your own private time.

If work is where you are learning your work, then the reality is that you will possible take longer to get to world class and you will have surface level understanding and implementation. The real marketing think work and learning, happens far from public view and happens in the early hours or late evenings when you are trying to figure out your challenges. Go out and create magic!
